Special mentions from the jury

The Typhlo & Tactus international jury is made up of 7 members from 7 different countries (Belgium, France, Great Britain, Italy, Netherlands, Poland and Czech Republic). They are all specialists in the field of visual impairment; librarians, early intervention advisors, parents of blind children or publishers of materials.
They analyzed 69 designs over 3 days and collectively awarded 8 special mentions to 8 designs:

  • Didactic mention x 2
  • Artistic mention x 2
  • Book games mention x 2
  • Sensitive or current subject mention x 2
  • Tactile boldness mention x 2

Since 2024, these mentions have replaced the “Favorites” awards given by each member of the jury to a model in previous editions of the competition.

Strong points:

  • Relevant book for small children,
    waiting for the next volume
  • Nice technique
  • Clear tactile contrasts
  • Contrastes tactiles clairs
  • Limited outline makes it easy to read
  • Very, very well done
  • Fun to find the same and the opposite
  • The pull tabs are useful for recomposing the image.
  • Good book for very young children

Point to improve:

  • A bit short for a game book

A Lenda da Vitória-Régia (The Legend of La Vitória-Régia) - Rosana Mont’Alverne, Marie Ines Piekas & Naotake Fukushima - Brazil

Stong points:

  • The material is contrasting and interesting.
  • The pop-up illustrations are well chosen.
  • The textures change with each page.
  • The cover is tactile.
  • This model is of interest to visually impaired and partially sighted children.
  • The theme is exotic and can even be used for learning purposes.
  • This book is an important introduction to another culture.
  • It talks about origins.
  • It crosses the Sighted Culture it is a legend very well treated.

Points to improve:

  • There is a lot of detail, which is perhaps difficult to grasp.
  • A few safety shortcomings were noted.
  • The material between the mountain and the trees is too soft.
  • The mirror illustration: the reflection is too visual an image.
  • A few errors of proportion.
  • The canvases are a little large.

Sensitive or topical subject

De schat van Teun (Teun's treasure) - Marion Brillemans & Ann Conefrey - The Netherlands

Stong Points:

  • The subject is topical, it shows a cane for the blind.
  • The illustrations are relevant, the materials are well chosen.
  • It deals with everyday recognition.
  • This book can be presented to a wider audience.
  • The story about disability is interesting.
  • There are good contrast.
  • The binding concept is an interesting one. It makes for comfortable reading.
  • An interesting format.
  • Overall, this book is very well produced.
  • The outlines of the images are well defined.
  • The object images are not on the characters.
    There are haptics images (gestures adapted for the stairs).
  • The mail is read in Braille and is not read by sighted people,
    so the visually impaired are in a strong position.
  • The story is fluid.

Points to improve:

  • The impromptu ending is hard to understand.
  • The image of the bottle. The cork is on top.
  • The proportions in relation to the perspectives are difficult to understand.
  • The illustrations are a bit flat and glued together, and this gives a lack of feel.
    Tech is not easy to understand.
  • Beware of the font, the serif is not very accessible for the visually impaired.

Le Pays des Z'Outils (The land of Z'Tools) - Camille Morandeau, Celia Macon & Ninon Gondal - France

Strong points:

  • Interesting legend, presentation of each tool..
  • This is a subject that is not often covered, so it’s relevant.
  • The text also provides sound effects, giving children the pleasure of discovery.
  • The technique used to open the box is clever.
  • The format of the book is very good and ties in with the house being built.
  • The story is fun, instructive and even educational.
  • The onomatopoeia is dynamic.
  • Learning about different planes: verticality and horizontality.
  • Moving from 2D to 3D.
  • The binding has a spine, which is very attractive and practical.
  • It’s a lovely book with lots of explanations.
  • You can make different sounds with each tool.

Point à améliorer:

  • It would be interesting to have metal tools.

Strong points:

  • The subject is interesting and original, it names emotions, COVID.
  • The animals are grateful and very interactive.
  • The images can make sound depending on the gesture.
  • The subject of disgust is very relevant.
  • A book to help children concentrate.
  • Allows for in-depth discussion of emotion.
  • Beautiful, tactile definition of emotions.

Points to improve:

  • No games in the book
  • Not a book in the shape of books
  • The box gives an instinctive reading,
    this confuses the overall picture.
  • This can be tiring for children.
  • There is a lack of autonomy in relation
    to the format of the book.
